Spring 1974 These photographs are among the few remaining images from a journey through Southern Europe in April 1974, shortly before Easter. During an evening drive through the rural outskirts of Lisbon, we were unexpectedly stopped by soldiers. Without realizing it at the time, we had encountered the early stages of what would become the Carnation Revolution, which ended the dictatorship just eleven days later. The uneasy atmosphere prompted us to leave the next morning, travelling via the south of Portugal into Spain.
In Jerez de la Frontera we encountered a rain-soaked Semana Santa. Persistent rain shaped the streets and created a subdued setting in which these rare photographs were taken. The images include three Guardia Civil officers sheltering in a doorway with an elderly man, and a Nazareno standing beside a stone silhouette carved into a street corner — a chance and almost surreal resemblance.

A quiet still life captured in a hotel room: a small table sits beneath a mounted mirror, bathed in the warm glow of a red lampshade.
